Porbeagle sharks are found in oceans all around the southern hemisphere and across the North Atlantic Ocean, so they can be found in many areas along the coast of the United Kingdom. Porbeagle sharks can be found in the waters around Cornwall, southwest England, in both the English Channel off Cornwall’s south coast and the Celtic Sea off the north coast. Porbeagle sharks are known to migrate long distances and can be found in a variety of habitats, from coastal waters to deep offshore areas. They are typically found at depths of up to 200m, but have been known to dive as deep as up to 1,800 metres.

Book a boat trip and you might get lucky to see one of these fantastic creatures in our Cornish waters. Sharks are not a common sighting on our trips as they do not need to surface to breathe like whales and dolphins do, and tend to stick to deeper waters. We have, however, seen sharks breaching out of the water from the boat occasionally when in pursuit of fish, so you never know! Experience our boat trips and keep your eyes open and you might just get lucky.
A porbeagle shark is a species of large mackerel shark that is found in the North Atlantic and southern oceans.
Porbeagle sharks can grow up to 3.5 metres in length and weigh up to 200kg.
Porbeagle sharks have a streamlined body with a pointed snout and large pectoral fins. They are typically blue-gray in color, with white undersides and a white patch on the rear base of the first dorsal fin and bottom of the tail.
Porbeagle sharks are known to prey on a variety of fish, including mackerel, herring, cod, and squid.
Although they are the closest living relative to the Great White Shark, Porbeagle sharks are around half the size and are not considered to be a threat to humans; but, like any wild animal, will defend themselves if they feel threatened.

The average lifespan of a porbeagle shark is around 20-25 years, but scientists believe they could live to be over 40.
Porbeagle sharks are considered to be a vulnerable species globally, but their North Atlantic population is classed as critically endangered due to overfishing, and they have almost disappeared from Mediterranean waters. Their slow reproductive rate means their population takes a long time to recover.
Padstow Sealife Safaris give you the chance to get up close and personal with these fascinating creatures. Depending on the time of year that you choose to visit, you’ll have the chance to see a number of different species.
